"The Sinhaya" the lion
Lion has always been revered in Sri Lankan lore. After all, the major race in Sri Lanka, the Sinhalese , are supposed to be descendants of a lion. (Sinha, lion and le', blood in Sinhala, the language of the majority of the people). The lion is also prominently displayed on the flag of Sri Lanka.
This wood carving of a lion, looks well aged from the appearance, and the fine patina that it has acquired.

Sigiriya
This rock fortress was built by king Kasyapa in the 5th century A.D. and was a royal citadel for more than 18 years. In a sheltered pocket, approached by a spiral stairway, are the famous frescoes. The summit of the rock, with an area of nearly one hectare was the site of the palace, the outer wall of which was built on the very brink of the precipice. The UNESCO - sponsored Central Cultural Fund has restored Sigiriya's 5th century Water Gardens to their former glory. |

King Parakrama Bahu the great
On the Southern side of the Parakrama Samudra (Polonnaruwa) is a striking stone statue of a bearded man holding in his hands what seems to be book (written on palm leaves). The care-worn expression hints at royalty and popular belief identifies it as a statue of Parakramabahu the Great.

Frescoes on Sigiriya
O adorn the "mirror wall" of the rock fortress Sigiriya in the northern plains of Sri Lanka. Some believe that they are asparas, heavenly nymphs. Perhaps they were ladies of the court on their way to the temple or even ancient "pinups" for the entertainment of the lonesome young ruler. Painted during the reign of King Kasyapa in the fifth century (A.D.), these frescoes have retained their brilliant colors until this day, protected from the sun, wind, and rain by the overhanging rock. |

"Muwo" Sri Lankan Deer
There are four species of deer in the plains and jungles of Sri Lanka. Spotted deer, barking deer, mouse deer and the Sambhur (elk). The Sambhur is somewhat darker than the others, and is the biggest, about five feet at the shoulders, and perhaps the most handsome. The "spotted deer" shown here is by far, the most common, and can be seen in large herds in some of the national parks and most of the open plains, specially in the northern dry sector.

"Atha" Sri Lankan Tusker
Throughout history tuskers have played a major role in Sri Lanka's affairs. The kings of Sri Lanka rode to war on tuskers back. The tuskers guarded the palaces and temples, as evident from the many carvings on granite at the ancient temples, in cities like Anuradhapura, and Polonnaruwa. Even today the most treasured item for the Buddhists in Sri Lanka, the "tooth relic" of Lord Buddha is carried on the back of an tusker during the Kandy Esala Perahara.

The New Year
Sinhalese and Tamil New Year (avurudu), which is celebrated about the 13th - 14th of April, is a very special time in Sri Lanka. The larders are full since the harvest has just been collected, the trees are full of flowers, the homes are freshly painted and it is time for festivities. The precise times when the old year ends, and the new year begins, (most times the two does not coincide) are calculated by astronomers, and is generally announced by the peal of temple bells. Everything during this time must be performed at precise times (nakatha), and in the prescribed way. The lighting first fire in the hearth, start of work, first transaction, first application of oil to hair, first meal, to name a few. In between these rituals, the time is spent playing games, visiting friends and relatives, enjoying the many sweets that are made for the occasion, and generally having a great time.
